As part of the research, students were first given the opportunity to talk to people experiencing long COVID symptoms to understand the impact of the condition. The proposal for this research was generated by a think tank composed of 400 undergraduate biomedical science and medicine students from Utrecht University, under the guidance of researchers from the immunology departments of the Utrecht and Amsterdam university medical centers. Late last year the long COVID foundation funded its first piece of targeted long COVID research into autoimmunity. “Our goal is to set up a national long COVID research consortium with the collaborating university medical hospitals in the Netherlands, so that together we can build up a national patient cohort and biobank.” To this end, the foundation aims to team up with scientists leading flagship projects and to encourage collaborative work that brings results and stimulates more research. Then we envisage a top-down, global research set-up, which brings together different disciplines from different medical fields.” Since there is so little knowledge, we need to stimulate a lot of good ideas that can generate pilot projects that could give direction to bigger research programmes. We also go directly to scientists to see how we can develop concrete research plans or pilot projects to fund. CollaborationĪnother part of their work is stimulating new research, as Ellen explains. They are now expanding the board to include non-medical participants. They currently have a patient sounding board, composed of doctors who themselves have long COVID, which means that any funding decisions can be fairly assessed by people with an understanding of both the condition and the science behind it. “Scientists can approach us with proposals for research projects that require between US$ 15 000 and US$ 100 000 of funding, and within 2 weeks we can let them know whether or not it’s in our scope, or whether we need to know more before funding it.” The long COVID foundation has created a team of 8 dedicated researchers who scan and compile the latest research into the condition, so that funding can be directed towards the research they’ve assessed as having the greatest potential. Therefore, the long COVID foundation has 4 clear values that shape its mission: speed, solution orientation, collaboration, and focus. With studies showing that 10–20% of people who develop COVID-19 go on to experience a variety of mid- and long-term effects after they recover from their initial illness, the foundation is driven by patients’ need for urgent answers. Together, they are raising money from private sources, both through crowdfunding and through targeted fundraising from high-net-worth individuals, family-run businesses and non-profit organizations. And to do that, we need money.” A clear focusīoth Ellen and Annelies come with experience very relevant to developing the foundation: Ellen has expertise in fundraising for start-up businesses and is used to managing complex multiparty innovation projects, while Annelies is a doctor with a large network of contacts in the medical and scientific world and an active member of the Dutch community of long COVID patients. “It works because we are all aiming for the same goals, and we are all sending the same message that we need to understand the causes of long COVID so that we can develop treatments. Annelies describes how this complements the work of other long COVID organizations in the Netherlands that concentrate more on supporting patients with information, care and rehabilitation, organizing peer contacts or political lobbying, for instance. The long COVID foundation seeks to fill this gap by dedicating itself exclusively to fundraising for biomedical research, or research that examines the biological and physical reasons for the condition, including reasons for autoimmunity (where the body’s immune system attacks its own tissues). “There have been very few studies looking at the biomedical part of this disease.” “So far, much of the focus has been on the epidemiology, logging of symptoms, sending out of questionnaires, and the organization of health care,” says her fellow co-founder, Annelies Bos, who has herself been living with long COVID for the past 3 years. “What I don’t understand is why there isn’t more of a sense of urgency about funding research into long COVID, when it is costing society so much,” says Ellen Bark, co-founder of Stichting Long COVID, the Dutch long COVID foundation.

As I said, the combos are mainly based on what weapon you have equipped – or if you have any weapon equipped at all in some cases. Now that we have the terminologies out of the way, it will be easier for us to discuss and understand the combos. For example, eAir means when the jump is about to end. When this is written before a command, it means that action is just about to end. Keep in mind that unlike combos, Strings are not absolute and that means there will be many random strings that you can find that aren’t listed here. However, unlike combos, they are much more likely to be broken out of and usually don’t even make it that difficult. Strings are similar to combos in the sense that they are a mix of different moves coming together. This is not true in every case, but it mostly applies as a rule. They follow the same terminology as the other attacks, such as dSig, nSig, and so on.Ĭombos are moves which cannot be broken out of until the thing is over or the player using it misses. These are the signature moves that are specific for the legends that the player uses. Holding down on the ground and pressing the heavy attack helps you hit the ground with both strength and speed. The recovery move is self-explanatory as it helps you recover by pressing any movement button besides down to recover from an animation. Same as the other air ones, it means holding down while in the air just like dLight. This means that you’re in the air and are holding a side like sLight. This is the same as neutral Light but you’re in the air. This means pressing the light attack button while holding down on the movement of your character. This means pressing the light attack button while holding your character’s movement towards the left or right sides. This simply means pressing the light attack button with no particular direction selected. And to do that – we need to first take a look at the game’s terminology itself. However, the combos have to be mentioned with the game’s terminology to make it easier to understand what the player is supposed to do. In this guide, we’ll be discussing all of the combos for every single weapon in the game. So, the different potential of pulling off cool combos in the game relies on the weapon that your character has equipped and can be learned off of that. One way that Brawlhalla manages to make its balancing simpler in the game is that the combos are based on the weapons that your character uses rather than something that your character does exclusively to them. Brawlhalla is a competitive fighting game and if there’s one thing that you know for sure is going to be a part of this genre it’s the fact that there are going to be tons of unique combos and strings to pull off in the game. Idea #2 – Developing numeracy skills with counting and sorting This is a wonderful activity for kids to work on developing their fine motor skills. Simply grab a piece of paper and marker and encourage your children to trace each of the stars. However, once you’ve popped the star pieces out, you’re left with a great star stencil. The Game of Life Junior provides each game with a set of stars which you need to collect to win the game. Read on! Idea #1 – Increase fine motor skills with stencil tracing I’ve also created a way to add these ideas to the existing game, to sneak in some additional educational and life skills benefits. I’m always keen to use existing toys in new and exciting ways, so I’ve created five super simple and super fun ways to use the Game of Life Junior board game. I also got to tell you and Chloe what the last toy I played with was before heading to the Chocolate Factory and thinking about all the chocolate I could eat.”Īs you can see from Finlee’s description above, the Game of Life Junior really gets kids thinking and working on their story telling, which will help with their language development and their confidence. I was so excited because I then earned my pocket money because I helped clean the kitchen. Then I was chosen to hold an owl at the bird show, I’d be a bit nervous if I had to do this in real life, Mummy. “First of all, I went to the water park and had a blast on the slides. Here is Finlee’s story (my seven-year-old): Even better, you keep all of these cards in front of you and at the end of the game each player retells their game story. When you get an action card, you may need to act something out, sing a song or do something in order to collect your star. Action cards are all about getting kids and adults to think creatively and tell a story. One of the coolest things I’ve seen implemented into a board game is the action cards that Game of Life Junior has. Playing the Game of Life Junior is super simple: Collect at star at every place you stop and remember that some action cards give you stars too. You’ll want to visit as many fantastic places as you can! Spin the spinner and move your car around the board.I know winning isn’t the most important part of the game, but it’s still important to understand how someone can win when playing the Game of Life Junior. From the super bright colours of the board game, to the cute race cars, to the many adventures we were going to have (the water park, city zoo and more), we were ready to test out this awesome new game. It doesn’t have to be a big accent or anything, but see what happens if you lean into beat 1 a little bit. A lot of sound gets lost in the distance between the piano’s soundboard and the chorister’s ears, so one thing I frequently do is to emphasize the first beat in each measure. When I go to a concert and hear pianist accompany choirs, I often feel that although they play well, they’re not giving the choir enough rhythmic support. The singers will feel more comfortable and supported by your music. Can you make a piano sound like a flute? Try it! Can you play like a timpanist? Yes you can! Do anything you can to make the piano sound like a band or orchestra. Mozart, Beethoven and Mahler would have done this, and you can too. Piano accompaniment parts are often orchestral reductions and are written to be “readable.” So if you want a richer sound, then feel free to fill out the chords more and add octaves where appropriate. Double the bass line down an octave if that helps. You’re the drummer, bass player, guitarist, pianist, and maybe even string section! If there’s a rhythmic bass part, play it percussively and with a deep, rich sound like a bass/drum duo would. If the group is singing a rock, pop, or gospel piece, then you aren’t “just” a pianist.
In high school, I had read a *NIX book during detention (There was a time when I just didn’t like going to class…), and I consider that experience to be one of the defining moments of my life. I had been coding sprites since I lost my first teeth, learned BASIC and was already on IRC and BBS’s, but UNIX was a gloriously complex and special thing. We didn’t have Linux back then really, People primarily used FreeBSD and some of the other commercial distros. I still consider myself a System V fangirl, after paying many years of dues in UNIX Technical Operations for a large managed hosting company. That’s how I got into security, so I’m really a paranoid UNIX admin who happened upon security.īut I digress. Mac OS X is extremely secure to begin with, with fantastic built-in features such as full-disk encryption with FileVault, a firewall, many sharing and other more risky features disabled by default, and GateKeeper for application protection. The standard features are great for most people, but remember – I’m paranoid. Security can generally always be improved for any device, system, solution, etc. When I install a fresh copy of MacOS X, there are certain pieces of software that I absolutely must install, and most are security tools. I’ve compiled a list of the security software I tend to install on every Mac I use. These vary from network firewalls to monitoring of specific IOCs (indicators of compromise). I’m not affiliated with any of these companies (that I know of), these are just awesome tools I recommend. You’re perfectly okay only using stock Mac OS X, as these tools are mostly monitoring tools for the truly paranoid. The Mac OS X Firewall works perfectly fine, but there are tools that offer additional functionality. At this point we are about 25% Ventura, but there are no concerns about any user updating. In no particular order, these are my top pieces of software for protecting your Apple Mac OS X computers: These tools may also adversely affect performance, because they are constantly watching. Some stuff needed to be updated, we had to deploy some nonLTS releases but we got it done. I simply explained what was going on with our security partners in October, and made plans. That Security tool is now in the process of being replaced. We had Ventura fully validated by Mid November less one security tool. There are 7 security clients on our devices, as well as a full testing and validation parity to our windows environment which is 99% of our devices. I work in a very old company in the finance sector that is very much stuck in its ways. I cannot stress enough, submit feedback.Īs far as older organizations. People who did not test in that time ignored the writing on the wall. We had from June to October for testing along with all of our security vendors. My main point is Apple has been very obvious about this shift. I am sure we would both agree on how horribly Apple is handling all of this. Personally I think Apple should be working harder to encourage participation, and Apples AppleSeed Program is total crap but it what we must deal with to use Apple Products. Its an investment thing, not all vendors are really invested in macOS as a platform. We got rid of the vendors that took their sweet time to validate macOS. They should release new OSs every other year like it used to be in the past rather than a new OS for the sake of releasing a new OS every year.Īs for 3rd party vendors, we have had the same issue. I feel Apple does release new versions of macOS too frequently. The biggest sin I find in this is apples insistence in releasing the new OS going in to 4th quarter with many people out on holiday during the testing period. Considering Apple only patches all security findings in the current release of macOS, it should be all of our goals to get to current as soon as possible. Generally speaking 3 months is 25% the way though the life cycle of any macOS release. Its on to users as to what they do at this point. (Either delaying major and minor updates)Īdditionally, when my profiles actually take effect, they lose it after a restart for example.Ĭurrently they don't seem to take effect not even temporarily.Īpple is not forcing the update, they are simply preventing us from blocking it. Even on macOS Big Sur, Ventura is appearing as available. If you currently have a longer delay period for major update than minor updates, increase your minor update delay to match the desired major delay period." - That's the first thing we tried and it's not working Use both the major and minor update delay settings to prevent Mac computers in your organization from offering macOS Ventura for up to 90 days. Anyway, the info published by Apple here is not precise in the least: Ĭontinue to use the major update delay setting to prevent Mac computers in your organization from offering macOS Ventura for up to 90 days." - tested several times and it's not working (edited) Rao made the presentation on December 12, 2006. Kamireddi Venkateswara Rao, popularly known as Prof. Problems that involve metric measurement are good vehicles for developing division by decimals. Although it is reasonable to consider 12 objects measured in lots of 0.6, it is quite a stretch to imagine 12 objects shared into 0.6 equal sets. The questions in this activity use a measurement context for division rather than an equal-sharing context. You need to work with your students to correct this common error of reasoning. As the examples in the chart below illustrate, the opposite is true in many cases. This overgeneralisation is based on what happens with whole numbers. Some may still think that “multiplication makes bigger” and “division makes smaller”. Students must be able to understand multiplication and division by powers of 10 if they are to handle more complex problems. Pages 22–27 of Book 7: Teaching Fractions, Decimals, and Percentages from the NDP resources describe how materials such as deci-mats or decimal pipes can be used to model these patterns in the place value system. Powers of 10 are created by multiplication by 10, so moving one column to the left in the table above equates to division by 10. Students will find it helpful to create this pattern for exponents greater than or equal to 1 and then extend it to the left: Powers of 10 may also be less than 1, but their meaning will be less obvious. Powers of 10 with an exponent of 1 or greater are counting numbers. There are also 3 zeros in the product (1 000). The “3” indicates that 3 tens have been multiplied together. Powers of 10 can be written using exponents, for example, 10 3 = 1 000. Some powers of 10 are:ġ0 x 10 = 100 (ten tens equal one hundred)ġ0 x 10 x 10 = 1 000 (ten times ten times ten equals one thousand)ġ0 x 10 x 10 x 10 = 10 000 (ten times ten times ten times ten equals ten thousand)ġ0 x 10 x 10 x 10 x 10 = 100 000 (ten times ten times ten times ten times ten equals one hundred thousand). Powers of 10Īre created by multiplying tens together. If you found this content useful in your research, please do us a great favor and use the tool below to make sure you properly reference us wherever you use it.The questions in this activity are about multiplication and division by powers of 10. Now that you know what 10 to the 10th power is you can continue on your merry way.įeel free to share this article with a friend if you think it will help them, or continue on down to find some more examples. Hopefully this article has helped you to understand how and why we use exponentiation and given you the answer you were originally looking for. Why do we use exponentiations like 10 10 anyway? Well, it makes it much easier for us to write multiplications and conduct mathematical operations with both large and small numbers when you are working with numbers with a lot of trailing zeroes or a lot of decimal places. Now that we've explained the theory behind this, let's crunch the numbers and figure out what 10 to the 10th power is:ġ0 to the power of 10 = 10 10 = 10,000,000,000 Let's look at that a little more visually:ġ0 to the 10th Power = 10 x. So we mentioned that exponentation means multiplying the base number by itself for the exponent number of times. The caret is useful in situations where you might not want or need to use superscript. So basically, you'll either see the exponent using superscript (to make it smaller and slightly above the base number) or you'll use the caret symbol (^) to signify the exponent. There are a number of ways this can be expressed and the most common ways you'll see 10 to the 10th shown are: The exponent is the number of times to multiply 10 by itself, which in this case is 10 times. When we talk about exponentiation all we really mean is that we are multiplying a number which we call the base (in this case 10) by itself a certain number of times. Let's get our terms nailed down first and then we can see how to work out what 10 to the 10th power is. That might sound fancy, but we'll explain this with no jargon! Let's do it. So you want to know what 10 to the 10th power is do you? In this article we'll explain exactly how to perform the mathematical operation called "the exponentiation of 10 to the power of 10". |
